Manawapopore (Lower Kavora Lake) a taonga (treasure) of Ngai Tahu

This deed of recognition recognises Ngai Tahu historic, spiritual, cultural and traditional relationship with Manawapopore (Lower Mavora Lake) and the manawhenua status which results from this relationship.

Manawapopore (and Hikuraki, the neighbouring Upper Mavora Lake) are part of one of the most significant catchments in Murihiku (Southland). The wetland also lies in the path of the important trail from the mouth of the Oreti River onward, via the Greenstone Valley, to the head of Whakatipu-wai-maori (Lake Wakatipu), or alternatively continuing along the Greenstone Valley and out via the Hollyford to the West Coast. These were important trading routes, to gather pounamu for exchange with northern iwi for materials and foods unavailable in the south.

Manawapopore (Lower Mavora) is noted for eel weirs, which were constructed on the lake edges for catching eels, utilising flat stones, built in a loop out from the lake edge, with gaps at either end and one in the middle. Eels like this type of environment that eels to congregate in, hence reliable catches are made.

The tupuna (ancestors) had considerable knowledge of such techniques, of places for catching and gathering kai and other resources.  Their close relationship with the area and their dependence and respect for it, ensuring the sustainable use of its resources.

About The Cause

IMG_0503The Winton Salvation Army is active in the Central Southland Community.  The Youthwork team works in local schools as well as running several out of school programs and activities to support, engage and develop young people in our community.

This work has been increasing, with a Youthworker training program being added in 2013, and a range of new equipment.  Equipment includes kayaks, laser tag, adventure based learning games and resources etc…  we desperately need to build a storage area for this equipment, and a few other things we are planning on getting.  The equipment helps use creation and areas like Mavora, we think the outdoors is a  great place for young people to grow.   So we have set out to build a new garage and youth/children room at our Dejoux Rd site in Winton.

The new area will allow us to create a youth/children zone, and significant increase the options for what we do.  The storage will be amazing!  It is hoped that over time we will be able to develop this area to include a children/youth lounge, recording area for young muso’s in our community, a workshop and a number of other activities.  We are extremely excited about the possibilities it creates.  Funds raised from this event will be used to help build this new area.

Reviews

Check out some of the feedback we've had.

We think we've had the best competitors a race could ask for, lots of fun, encouragement and support for us as event organiser and for other competitors. We've also seen people really pushing themselves, reaching personal goals and the satisfaction that comes with knowing you did it. We also love seeing whole families come up and enjoy a stunning part of creation together. Here's a few comments from past competitors.
